What is an AC to DC Converter?
The term AC to DC converter refers to a switch-mode power supply that takes an AC input and converts it to a DC output. One of the most common scenarios is taking the 240v AC mains supply and converting it to a lower DC voltage, such as 12v or 24v.
There are many types of converters or power supplies that can do this. The type you need will depend very much on your application.
AC to DC Adapters
Power adapters are external power supplies used in commercial, residential, and medical applications.
This means they are not embedded inside the equipment they are powering. Don’t confuse the term ‘external’ with weatherproof. The term ‘external’ in this context does not mean the power supply can be used outside.
MEAN WELL offers two types of AC to DC adapters:
MEAN WELL Plug Pack
MEAN WELL Desk Top Power Adapter
You will be familiar with both, as they are common in many homes. Plug packs can also be referred to as wall warts or wall-mounted power supplies.
Desktop power supplies are used to power laptops, etc. They have a power cord to connect them to the AC power point.
Other types of AC to DC Converter
Other types of switch mode power supplies that convert AC to DC are:
LED Drivers: Power supplies with a specific Australian electrical safety certificate for LED lighting applications.
LED Driver
DIN Rail Power Supplies: These are used in industrial applications, where they are mounted on a DIN rail in a control cabinet or switchboard.
MEAN WELL NDR-120 DIN Rail Power Supply
Enclosed Power Supplies: Also called ‘caged’ power supplies. These are designed to be used as a component inside a piece of equipment. For example, your LCD TV, or a photocopier, etc.
MEAN WELL RSP-100 Power Supply
Battery chargers: These are power supplies that have built-in control circuitry to manage the charging of a battery.
MEAN WELL NPB-450 Battery Charger
There are many others, but these are probably the most common.
