Adjustable Power Supply

Many power supplies in the MEAN WELL range are adjustable. With some models, you can adjust the output voltage, with others you can adjust the output current, and with some, you can adjust both.   

 

In this blog post the term ‘adjustable’ means a power supply that allows you to trim the output voltage and or current. In this blog, we will exclude dimmable LED drivers, but you can learn more about dimmable LED Drivers here.

 

Methods of Adjustment  

There are three ways that a MEAN WELL power supply can be adjusted. Most have a potentiometer near the connection terminals, which you adjust with a screwdriver. Take care when doing this, only a small movement is required.  

 

With some MEAN WELL power supplies, you can adjust the output remotely by applying an external voltage signal, usually 0.5 to 5v. This is useful if you want to vary the output of the power supply as part of an automated process.

 

MEAN WELL also offers a range of power supplies with CAN bus or PMBus for easier integration with your control system.

 

Types of Adjustable MEAN WELL Power Supply  

Most types of power supply offered by MEAN WELL have an adjustable model in the range.  The only power supplies with no adjustment capability are the desktop power adapters and plug packs.

 

Adjustable DIN Rail Power Supplies  

Most MEAN WELL DIN rail power supplies have a potentiometer on the front that allows you to adjust the output voltage. The permissible range of adjustment is stated in the product data-sheet.

Adjustable Enclosed Power Supplies  

Again, most types of enclosed power supply offered by MEAN WELL are adjustable. Many have a potentiometer adjacent to the connection terminals on the power supply.

The permissible range of adjustment is shown in the datasheet.   

 

As mentioned above, the output of some models can be controlled by applying an external control voltage. This allows you to adjust the output voltage and or current as part of an automated process.   

 

The range of permissible adjustment is usually greater when adjusting the output of the power supply remotely. The extended range of adjustment is usually mentioned in the section of the data sheet titled ‘Function Manual’. The same applies to models with CAN bus or PMBus.   

 

Adjustable DC to DC Converters  

The information above also applies to MEAN WELL’s range of DIN rail-mounted DC-to-DC converters and enclosed DC-to-DC converters.   

 

Adjustable Battery Chargers  

Different batteries require different charging voltages. As with the enclosed power supplies, there is a potentiometer adjacent to the output terminals that allows you to adjust the voltage. Again, the permissible adjustment range is stated in the product datasheet.
