Correctly Matching LED Drivers to LED Downlights
Many LED downlights have electronics integrated into their design, which regulates the current being supplied to the LEDs.
This type of LED downlight requires a constant voltage type LED driver.
Constant Voltage LED Drivers
If you intend to use a dimmable LED driver there is something that you need to be aware of.
Dimmable LED drivers use one of two methods to affect the dimming. They either use a PWM output, or they vary the amplitude of the current output.
LED Drivers with PWM Output
You can run into problems if the LED driver has a PWM type output.
This is because the output is being cycled on and off at a frequency of up to 1.5Khz. In some instances, the electronics inside the light fitting can struggle to keep up with the switching and the light fitting doesn’t work correctly.
LED Drivers that Vary the Current Amplitude
You are probably better off using a LED driver that varies the amplitude of the output current to dim the lights. The output of these LED drivers remains constant.
However, make sure that you select a LED driver that matches the load as closely as possible. The actual load placed on the LED driver needs to be 90~95% of its maximum rating to ensure it dims correctly.
Constant Current LED Drivers
If the LED downlight has no internal electronics, then it will need a constant current LED driver.
You need to match the current output exactly and ensure the LED driver can deliver this current within the voltage range stipulated by the LED lights manufacturer.
